海盜、小熊是全大聯盟戰績第2名跟第3名的球隊，但他們必須要先打外卡戰，雙方都派出強投先發，上演頂尖對決。
今天(5日)例行賽封關戰，海盜4比0完封紅人，以98勝64敗守住國聯外卡第1名的位置，也守住外卡戰主場優勢。
小熊今天也以3比1擊敗釀酒人，97勝65敗成為國聯外卡第2名。海盜、小熊是全大聯盟戰績第2名跟第3名，卻要在外卡戰一戰定生死，因為同區的紅雀100勝62敗是全大聯盟最強。
海盜、小熊外卡戰將於台灣時間8日登場，雙方先發投手是Gerrit Cole對決Jake Arrieta，Cole本季19勝9敗自責分率2.60，Arrieta是國聯賽揚獎大熱門，22勝6敗自責分率1.77。
「我們喜歡在主場比賽，投手也都喜歡在主場投球。我知道我們的球迷一定會力挺，我們也會讓球迷感到驕傲的。」海盜總教練Clint Hurdle表示。
